A Spanish tanker El Mattheos I, belonging to the company Marflet Marine, was kidnapped by pirates off the coast of Nigeria. We were advised by telephone at 2.am and from 7a.m. onwards the phone didn’t stop ringing.
The situation lasted 17 days and SCR acted as spokesperson for the company communicating with Spanish, Peruvian and international media at all times, and coordinating the risk team involved. Peru was involved because the Captain and most of the crew came from there. We also talked to the crew members families reassuring their safety during this dramatic situation.
The communication had to be as transparent as possible without revealing facts which could prejudice the safety of those on board the ship. The safety of the crew was our first and foremost objective.
